Article Number 1: WATER POLLUTION IN INDIA
What is water pollution ??? What cases water pollution ??? How does it affect living
organism ???
Water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen, and it exists in gaseous, liquid, and
solid states. Water is one of the most plentiful and essential compounds, occurring as
a liquid on Earth’s surface under normal conditions, which makes it invaluable for
human uses and as plant and animal habitat.
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies, usually as a result of human
activities, in such a manner that negatively affects its legitimate uses. Water pollution
reduces the ability of the body of water to provide the ecosystem services that it
would otherwise provide.

Key causes of pollution
include: spills or leaks from oil and chemical containers. trade effluent going into
surface water drains instead of foul water drains, or straight into watercourses.
removing too much water from surface waters and groundwater.
Contaminated water can Ha bor, bacteria, such as those responsible for
diediarrhoesa, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, hepatitis A, and polio. According to
the UN, every year, approximately 297,000 children under five die from diseases

linΒ³ked to poor sanitation, poor hygiene, or unsafe drinking water.
As India grows and urbanizes, its water bodies are getting toxic. It’s estimated that
around 70% of surface water in India is unfit for consumption. Every day, almost
40 million litres of waste water enters rivers and other water bodies with only a tiny
fraction adequately treated.

Waterborne diseases are rampant in India due to high levels of biological
contamination of water. Annually about 37.7 million Indians are affected by
waterborne disease, 1.5 million children diediarrhoesa and 73 million workers,
day are lost leading to an economic burden of $600 million a year.
70 percent of the fresh water sources in the country were found to be contaminated
and India ranks 120 out of 122 countries in terms of water quantity.
Causes of water pollution in India
ο· Industrial waste.
ο· Improper practices in agricultural sector.
ο· Reduction in water quantity in rivers in plains.
ο· Social and religious practices like dumping dead bodies in water, bathing,
throwing waste in water.

With 12.4 lakh deaths a year, India is marginally behind China, where 12.44 lakh
premature deaths attributed to air pollution. Other than air pollution, nearly 7
lakh premature deaths are attributed to water pollution, 1.5 lakh to
occupational pollution deaths and 2.3 lakh to the exposure to lead.
